How Women Entrepreneurs like Personal Collection Dealers Help the Philippine Economy

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are the heart of the Philippine economy, accounting for 99.5% of all business establishments. These enterprises generate employment, drive innovation, and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth. A report by the Asian Development Bank states that a remarkable 55.8% are owned or led by women, showcasing their pivotal role in the entrepreneurial landscape. Women-owned MSMEs in the Philippines are a testament to resilience, resourcefulness, and ambition. However, despite their undeniable impact, women entrepreneurs continue to face significant challenges that hinder their business growth and financial independence.

The same ADB report states that 79% of women-owned MSMEs in the Philippines are entirely owned by women, while 19% are majority-owned by women. The report also highlights that despite their strong presence, women-led businesses face barriers in financing, formalization, and digital adoption.

The Successes and Challenges of Women Entrepreneurs

Filipina entrepreneurs have achieved incredible success in various industries, from retail and food businesses to personal care and direct selling. Their ability to balance business with family responsibilities, maintain strong community ties, and exhibit financial prudence have contributed to their enterprises’ long-term sustainability. However, several barriers continue to prevent many women from reaching their full potential in business:

  1. Access to Finance – Women entrepreneurs often struggle with limited access to capital due to lack of collateral, credit history, or formal financial documentation. While many rely on personal savings and microfinance institutions, securing bank loans remains a challenge. According to the ADB report, only 2% of women-owned MSMEs secure bank loans, compared to 5% of men-owned businesses.
  2. Balancing Responsibilities – Cultural expectations and societal norms place a dual burden on women as both primary caregivers and business owners, making time management and scaling up a business difficult.
  3. Gender Bias – Women in business frequently encounter skepticism about their leadership and management capabilities, leading to fewer opportunities for networking and business expansion.
  4. Lack of Digital and Financial Literacy – Many women-owned businesses, especially microenterprises, lag behind in adopting digital financial services and e-commerce, limiting their market reach and growth potential. The ADB report highlights that 72% of women-owned MSMEs do not utilize digital financial services, compared to 56% of men-owned MSMEs.

Despite these challenges, women entrepreneurs continue to thrive and contribute immensely to the economy. Supporting them is not just a matter of gender equality—it is a powerful economic strategy for national development.
